The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) formulates and implements activities that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. The organisation focuses on strengthening women’s economic capacity; engendering governance and leadership; and promoting women’s rights and the elimination of violence against women. The China Office, established in 1998, is responsible for the People’s Republic of China, Mongolia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), and, in addition, acts as the secretariat for the United Nations Theme Group on Gender.
