The Institute for Integrated Rural Development, Hong Kong (IRD) was established in 2002 by the founding members of the China Education Association of the University of Hong Kong. The organisation assists people living in poverty-stricken rural areas to improve their livelihoods and raise their ability to fulfill their potential. IRD aims to ensure that the children and women in impoverished rural areas have access to quality and affordable health care services and education. To date, IRD has sponsored the education of more than 2,500 students, improved the health and learning environment of over 12,000 students studying in rural schools, and provided free gynaecological examination and body checkups for over 15,000 villagers.
