United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS)

Unverified non-profit organisation

UNMAS serves as the UN focal point for mine action and to support the UN’s vision of “a world free of the threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance, where individuals and communities live in a safe environment conducive to development, and where mine survivors are fully integrated into their societies.” UNMAS assists in five key areas: removing and destroying landmines and explosive remnants of war, and marking or fencing off contaminated areas; educating people so they understand and avoid the risks; facilitating medical assistance, rehabilitation, social and economic reintegration opportunities for victims; advocacy in support of adherence to and compliance with relevant international law; assisting countries in the destruction of their stockpiles.
