This document was submitted in response to a questionnaire distributed by Global Hand regarding humanitarian customs information. It provides regulations for importing humanitarian aid into Burundi.

Required documents

• The following documents are required for sending humanitarian cargo to Burundi:
• bill of lading/airway bill;
• commercial invoice;
• packing list;
• fumigation certificate;
• deed of donation;
• certificate of origin;
• signed Memorandum of Understanding with Burundi (see the Guide for International NGOs in Burundi, May 2001 (Guide des ONG Internationales au Burundi))

Prohibited goods

Goods which do not correspond to the goals of the projects, or which do not conform to the prescribed regulations (eg medications past their use-by date) are prohibited.

Tax exemption

Burundi offers tax exemption on humanitarian cargo, applicable to all goods, and all non-profit consignees.

Pre-shipment application

See Chapter 5 in the“Guide for International NGOs in Burundi”, May 2001 (Guide des ONG Internationales au Burundi) for information on tax exemption and the rights of customs on the goods and funds of NGOs.

Monetary valuation

Monetary valuation for the shipment as a whole is required.

Restrictions re new or second hand goods

Items past their expiry date are not permitted.
