MOTORBANK KENYA
A Social Hire Purchase Company, which aims at making health services delivery access to all families in Kenya, by supporting and empowering the Community Health Workers (CHWs). Motorbank provides simple Soft Motorcycle loans to Community Members and Community Health Workers (CHWs) to enable access in far and remote locations for health education and visitations. This facility also widens the coverage by individual CHWs in a given location where normally the infrastructure is poor or non existent. The motorcycles are at times used as community “ambulances” in remote places to access medical facilities. The loans are payable in 18 months, with monthly installment of about USD$80. The CHWs use the motorcycle as taxis (Boda –Boda) in periods when they are not on duty supplementing their usually minimal incentives from the government or NGOs. The CHWs in turn make an average of USD 250 per month from the “taxi” business. The repayments for the loan are returned to the partner or ploughed back to the program to support more CHWs. We are a small growing limited company, with about 20 support staff based in Nairobi. We have given motorcycle loans to over 500 customers our operations are in four counties in Kenya. ie Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu and Busia.
