Murambo BeeKeeping Association

Unverified non-profit organisation

Murambo Beekeeping Association (MBKA) is a community based organization in murambo Bubaare, Rubanda in the kigezi region, which addresses challenges faced by farmers throughout the apiculture chain.. Apiculture can create a source of sustainable income for the marginalized in rural areas of Uganda. It provides families with food, nutrients and medicine and has relatively low start- up costs and labour requirements. Moreover, pollination contributes to enhanced food security and increased yields.
TARGET GROUPS
• The action will target 1,500 individual members of rural communities living in the Lake Bunyonyi basin, of which 60% will be selected from the following sub-groups:

• Women and Girls: Coverage of wetlands and financial products to support wetland farming.

• Youth: Defined by this project as those between ages 18- 27. An estimated 78% of Ugandan youth are unemployed, particularly in rural areas where subsistence agriculture is extremely limited. Due to lack of access to land, rural-to-urban migration is increasing as young people seek opportunities beyond their communities.

• Batwa: Kabale and Rubanda are home to some of Uganda’s last surviving Batwa communities. Due to the creation of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) in the early 1990s, the Batwa were evicted from their homes and as the resettlement largely failed, 90% remain landless. Today, Batwa communities experience some of the highest levels of poverty in Uganda, as well as social exclusion, which severely restricts their job access.
EXPECTED RESULTS
• Rural households in all areas targeted by the project will benefit from a 25% increase in disposable income, improved food security and resilience as a result of climate-smart agricultural practices.
• 500 new jobs in sustainable sectors such as; horticulture, beekeeping, mushroom production, small livestock and sustainable energy and potential jobs in tourism.
• Community-led MBKA activities will also improve water availability, soil fertility and tree cover.
HOW:
• Providing beehives creates a source of sustainable income, lifelong skills, nutritional benefits (due to the proteins, amino acids, sugars, mineral trace elements, vitamins ) and increased food security to the most vulnerable in Uganda.
