Organizational Overview

GARAD, established on December 21, 2020, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on relief and development efforts for marginalized communities, particularly in the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia. It aims to address pressing issues such as drought, food security, gender empowerment, NRM, education and social conflicts resolutions through various humanitarian initiatives and community development projects. The organization is legally registered, with a registration license number of 5300 issued by the FDRE, Authority for Civil Society Organizations.

GARAD’s vision is to create an empowered African society where vulnerable groups can live with dignity and access essential services. Its mission focuses on bridging the gap between relief and development efforts, particularly for refugee and women, children, elders, orphaned children and marginalized/ segregated groups of the society.

Mission and Target Groups
GARAD’s primary mission is to enhance the livelihoods and resilience of the poorest and most marginalized communities through multi-sector interventions. Specific objectives include:

•Addressing the root causes of poverty and marginalization.
•Empowering women and youth through education and life skills.
•Promoting social and economic inclusion for refugees, IDPs, and minority groups.

The organization prioritizes vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, particularly in pastoral and agro-pastoral communities living in rural and semi-urban areas.

Key Projects Implemented and Donors funded:

1.Enhancing the Participation and Leadership of Women in Food Security Crises Response: IDPs and Refugee Program – Fafan Zone (2024-2025): Funded by Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) in collaboration with UN-Women Ethiopia. This project targeted 600 people, with 90% being women, in Harorays, Jigjiga, Kabribayah, and Awbare districts of Fafan Zone, living in refugee camps and IDPs sites. It focused on protection and humanitarian relief for women and children in displacement settings, including psychosocial support and awareness raising for survivors of gender-based violence. This project is currently active and in implementation phase.

2.Orphanage Rehabilitation & Education Support Program – Gode and Jigjiga (2024): Supported 1,200 orphan students with clothes and food utensils, donated by Ethiopian Airlines foundation, to motivate and enhance the moral of orphaned school children and other vulnerable children through provision of basic needs and necessities.

3.Youth Job Creation & Skill Development in Displacement Camps – Awbare (2023): Supported by Adukan Foundation, this project focused on creating decent jobs for displaced and refugee youth through skill-building, entrepreneurship support, and employment linkages.

4.Improvement of FGM Prevention and Advocacy Project – Shabelley District, Fafan Zone (2022): Funded by GIZ-Ethiopia, this project focused on community awareness creation and advocacy to prevent FGM and other Harmful Traditional Practices (HTP) by mobilizing religious leaders, women’s associations, and youth clubs.

5.Peacebuilding Through Agricultural Irrigation Management – Border Districts of Tuli-Guled and Gursum (2021): Conducted irrigation water infrastructure and capacity building for farmer (cooperatives)/communities along the border of Oromia and Somali regions to reduce resource-based conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence: Funded by Community & GARAD

6.Resilience Building Support for Drought-Affected IDPs – Korahay and Dolo Zones (2021): funded by RABCO charity foundation, implemented resilience-building interventions in Kabridahar and Warder districts, targeting drought-affected internally displaced communities to strengthen livelihood options and provide basic needs assistance.
