The World Bank Group
The World Bank is one of the world’s largest sources of development assistance. The World Bank is comprised of five insitutions:
- International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD)
- International Development Association (IDA)
- International Finance Corporation (IFC)
- Multilateral Investment Guarentee Agency (MIGA), and
- International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
It is a development bank which provides loans, policy advice, technical assistance and knowledge sharing services to low and middle-income countries to reduce poverty. The Bank promotes growth to create jobs and empower poor people to take advantage of these opportunities. The World Bank Group’s mission is to fight poverty and improve the living standards of people in the developing world, thus it supports the efforts of developing country governments to build schools and health centres, provide water and electricity, fight disease, and protect the environment.
The World Bank Group is also responsible for the preparation of data and analysis monitoring progress towards the achievement of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs). The Group also reviews and defines methodologies and technical issues in relation to the indicators, produces guidelines, and helps define priorities and strategies to support countries in data collection, analysis and reporting on MDGs.
