Ehtiopia Reads

Unverified non-profit organisation

Ethiopia Reads is an American NGO that is attempting to create a reading culture in Ethiopia. Its programmes are managed and run by Ethiopians who live and work in Addis Ababa and the regional capital of Awassa. The organisation offers regular training sessions for people who display a love of libraries, books and education. These skills are then carried into the library, the classroom and the community.

The organisation works with public schools to plant libraries for children at a rate of approximately one per month, with a goal of opening 100 libraries and in a long-term perspective, operating libraries in the eight provincial capitals of Ethiopia and surrounding rural areas.

The organisation also runs a number of projects. These include the Donkey Mobile Library which was designed to address the urgent need of supplying books to children in rural areas by bringing books to children in remote villages. Ethiopia Reads also publishes high quality, multi-lingual books for children in English as well as in Ethiopian languages.
