Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was founded in 1945 with a mandate to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living, to improve agricultural productivity, and to better the condition of rural populations. In crisis situations, FAO works in conjunction with the World Food Programme and other humanitarian agencies to help people rebuild their lives. The FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, providing behind the scenes assistance to help people help themselves. In Cuba, FAO programmes are oriented towards transfer of knowledge and technology in areas of: fisheries, forestry and natural resources, water resources development, animal husbandry, crop improvement, agribusiness, rural development, food and nutrition , food control and consumer protection and agricultural information and analysis.
