Machakos District Co-operative Union Ltd (MDCU)

(For-profit organisation)

MDCU was established in 1964 as an umbrella organisation of primary co-operatives in Machakos district, Kenya. Today it assists mainly marginalized producers in the handcraft sector with products such as wood carvings, baskets, soapstones, etc.

The mission of MDCU is to improve the quality of life of their members, employees and customers by supporting production, processing and marketing high quality products from their members. It strives to be known as a successful Co-operative Union that promotes the social economic interests of its members (both the rural and urban communities) through offering high quality products and services at competitive prices, without interfering with the environment.

The vision of MDCU is to be a recognized regional center of excellence in service provision to co-operatives and their members. It strives to become a leader in terms of improved service to customers, increased returns to share holders, highest rewards to employees and be a leading marketer for the Co-operative sector.

MDCU has embarked in an environment conservation program to rehabilitate the forests. A tree nursery project was initiated. MDCU ensures a safe and conducive working environment for all the staff at their production centres. Use of safe natural processing material and AZO free chemicals has been implemented in all the processing procedures.
