The World Trade Organization (WTO)

(For-profit organisation)

The World Trade Organization — the WTO — is the international organization whose primary purpose is to open trade for the benefit of all. The WTO agreements are lengthy and complex because they are legal texts covering a wide range of activities. But a number of simple, fundamental principles run throughout all of these documents. These principles are the foundation of the multilateral trading system.

The main goal that concerns the WTO, regarding the MDGs, is goal number 8, building a global partnership for development. However, WTO activities are also relevant to other goals, such as MDG 1, whose aim is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. In fact, the MDGs cannot be seen in isolation: they are all interconnected.
