Sustainable Economic Growth for Muslim Minorities in the Mewat Region, India

Requested by

Socionomic Minorities Welfare and WAQF Development India

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

We are trying to help the following oppressed, exploited and downtrodden people living in Mewat one of the most economically backward regions of Haryana, INDIA:

The Mewat region is a region of Haryana state in India and located at southern edge of Haryana, situated in the National Capital Region just 50 km from Delhi Airport. It covers 1,912 square km and is comprised of 550 villages with a population of approximately 1 million. Mewat region has always remained a region of backwardness even after independence. The area lags behind the rest of Haryana on almost every yardstick of development indices.

The Muslim minorities in the Mewat region. which is the predominant population group and are virtually completely agriculturist, are the most educationally, socially, politically and economically backward classes. According to 2001 census report, where 4.64% of population is living in urban and 95.36% in rural areas, the average household size in rural Mewat is 7. Agriculture production measured in terms of crop yield per hectare in Mewat is comparatively low. The literacy rate in Mewat is comparatively very low particularly in the case of female literacy. Literacy rate is 44.07% against State average of 67.91%, while female literacy rate is 24.26% against State average of 55.73%.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our purpose of this project is to improve the socioeconomic conditions of EBC and Muslims Minorities as under:

The purpose of this project is to improve the capacity of the socioeconomic conditions of economically backward classes and Muslim minorities in the Mewat region, deliver and stimulate sustainable economic growth, increase their food security in a perfect manner and take initiative in a wider range.
We wish to establish at least four offices in the region equipped with full infrastructure and operational staff that will work there have had the training required to commence their work.

The main activities of this project proposal are to promote social, educational and economic development in the region, particularly youths, women and girls, accordingly based on door-to-door surveys our team will conduct in a 2~3 month period. Some other activities that team will undertake include conducting door to door survey to service quality monitoring activities, disseminating the findings in local communities, raising public awareness, and providing information on sustainable economic growth and food security.

The following activities will also be undertaken:

-Coordination of SEG activities in their respective regions
-Liaise with local state administrations and local self governments bodies, local citizens and civil society
-Provide consultation and legal advice as and when required
-Provide oversight and monitoring the implementation of the project strategy and action plan in the regions
-Participate in assessment of socioeconomic development impacts at the local level via conducting baseline surveys and other studies.
The project is expected to benefit 35 direct beneficiaries and 4000 indirect beneficiaries which includes males, females, boys, girls, minorities, elderly & the disabled, etc.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

Anyone or any Organization, who is having interest in our above Project shall be our partner:

The target communities have provided volunteer staff and premises out of which the regional office can operate. The NGO head office in New Delhi will also have an important ongoing role in disseminating information and in coordinating project publicity events. We expect several government ministries (education, health & family welfare, Minorities welfare & justice, finance etc.) will in-principle support and have collaboration closely with our NGO. This provides important ministerial support including unprecedented access to staff and records, such as for monitoring activities that should not understated. They are, however, unable to provide direct financial support. That is why we would like to request from the Global Hand and other organizations to provide us financial assistance as prescribed for the proposed project.

In addition, we will appreciate if the management consider our request to make arrangements for the following equipment:

1. 4 laptops
2. 10 computers
3. 3 printers
4. 4 digital photostat machines
5. 2 projectors
6. 11 CCTV Cameras
7. 4 compact digital cameras.
