Laptops needed for farming project in Andhra Pradesh India

Requested by

Grameena Vikas Kendram Society for Rural Development

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Small and marginal cotton farmers who are vulnerable to suicides are our targeted beneficiaries. About 18000 distressed cotton farmers committed suicide between 2002 and 2006. Failure of monsoons, extremely fluctuating market prices, high input costs and exploitation of the farmers by middlemen etc have led to a series of farmers’ suicides in this agrarian country. Use of child labour, extremely toxic plant protection chemicals and gender issues are plaguing the Indian cotton farms.

Grant based community development programmes have failed to offer sustainable development opportunities so far. There is a need to explore other ways of helping the farmers, and this is what we are doing.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our project – Tip4change will facilitate these downtrodden farming communities to create social enterprises and use ICT to connect their farms with international markets. Together with responsible consumer groups, they will build a different market driven by shared values and a shared vision. Augmented transparency and accountability across the supply chain will be the key. Some of the value created in the product supply chain will be brought back to the villages and will fuel the community development initiatives instead of donor driven grants. Sustainable use of natural resources, equality, eliminating child labour, avoiding middlemen and creating reliable market structures will be the major areas of focus.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

We need partnerships in various aspects. Support of volunteers, developing appropriate mobile technology, devising apt reporting and monitoring systems, data entry and management etc are the areas of opportunity.

Please detail the resources that you need.

At present we need 4 laptops for running the office. If not, desktop compputers in good working order will also work.
