Support needed for post-recovery assistance in the Gedo region of Southern Somalia

Requested by

KREDO (Kaah Relief and Development Organisation)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Gedo Integrated Livelihoods Support Project aims to support a more effective move from emergency-relief dependency to resilience and rehabilitation of communities affected by drought-, flood- and conflict. These communities include pastoral, agro- pastoral, urban poor and internally displaced people suffering from acute food shortages and livelihood crises. This work requires strategic interventions to support and assist the communities to improve their diets, acquire adequate food, income and nutrition.
The project will address immediate and secondary livelihood needs of 10,000 vulnerable households in the districts of Luuq, Dolow and Beled-Hawa in the northern Gedo region. It will be implemented through cash-for-work (CFW) to generate employment for the poor households and provide cash injections in order to immediately raise the purchasing power of the target households in Gedo that in turn will provide essential livelihood protection and investment.

What is your project and how will it help?

The project will target 9,500-10,000 disadvantaged and food insecure households (pastoralist, agro-pastoralist, riverine and urban poor). The project will support the efforts of these communities to become self-sufficient by improving, intensifying and diversifying small scale agricultural production, alternative income-generating activities and increasing access to water and sanitation through a process of community based planning and capacity building. The project will also support drought affected populations with a particular focus on communities in Beled-Hawa and Dolow districts that have no immediate access to sufficient potable water. GILSP collaborates closely with all stakeholders at all levels, including communities, local institutions, development organizations, private sector and also works directly with customary institutions, women and other marginalized groups.
The project is composed of a set of interventions that complement one another in terms of responsiveness, effectives, appropriateness and service delivery. These components are: WASH, IGA and Food Security. The proposed interventions are designed in such a way that they will improve the livelihoods of the target communities.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

The project will work with local authorities, women’s goups, youth groups, religiouse leaders, village/district level development committes and other CSOs.

Please detail the resources that you need.

An amount of $800,000 has been requested to fund project activities to be implemented over a period of 24 months (2 years).
