Health Awareness Project for Grass Roots Level Villagers, India
Requested by
Kiranmayi Socio Educational Society (KISES)Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
Grass roots level villagers do not generally understand a range of health issues including the importance of immunization and growth monitoring, techniques of low cost nutritious food preparation, methods of birth control and spacing of children, the importance of using sanitary or pit type latrines and the preparation of safe drinking water and the maintenance of personal hygiene, etc.
This results in the deterioration of health, the increase of superstition and incorrect treatment leading to a high incidence of maternal mortality, child mortality, morbidity, dehydration and malnutrition. The incidence of infectious diseases is also relatively high.
The existing local doctors are not properly qualified or trained so that local people often have to travel long distances for proper treatment.
What is your project and how will it help?
The project will cover around 20 villages and around 30,000 people will benefit. It will enhance the quality of life in regard to health. Participants will be encouraged to attend meeting and to follow the advice given. The project aims to
a) reduce the incidence of maternal mortality, child mortality and morbidity de-hydration and malnutrition and to provide both antenatal and post-natal care to at least 70 % of the rural women within the next five years.
b) make people conscious through basic literacy, hygiene, nutritional and environmental education.
c) improve nutritional and health standards of mothers and children
d) make people aware about basic health needs within 5 years.
The organization already has a health centre in one of the villages at Machilipatnam Mandal. It has been run on an occasional basis, but currently lacks support necessary to keep it going. If we can become operational, the centre will benefit 20,000 people in 30 villages. The project will commence immediately after we secure financial support, and it will go on for 24 months.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
In this project people are the beneficiaries and the partners. People use health services and also pay a nominal fees towards the cost of the service. However, we are also mobilizing resources from the government through convergence efforts. Hence the government will be the secondary partner for this project.
Please detail the resources that you need.
