Building a School for Rural Children in Tanzania
Requested by
Tabora Network Training CollegeWho are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
We are trying to help the large number of children who drop out of school after primary seven (entry level for secondary education) because their families cannot afford the cost of sending them to boarding schools (this includes the cost of additional items required, such as bedding).
The nearest existing schools are about 3 miles away. This is too far for students to walk on a daily basis, especially as they are also expected to help with domestic chores such as fetching water, collecting firewood, cooking etc. We would like to empower young people with education and skills, so that they can fight rural poverty, improve their health and sanitation, and promote income generation.
What is your project and how will it help?
The project involves the construction of a community vocational training school for marginalized rural boys and girls. This will help impart vocational skills to the students, create awareness about the benefits and opportunities as a result of attaining formal education, use education as a tool to fight rural poverty and illiteracy, promote academic gender equity by bringing education closer to the girl children, bring education services closer to the people in the community. Additionally we will provide education to people with disabilities and orphans who cannot afford to attain education far from their communities
How can other people partner with you on your project?
We kindly request other people to help us with the construction of class rooms, administration block, gifts in-kind in the form of school furniture and office equipment, text books, computers or laboratory equipment.
Please detail the resources that you need.
Total estimate is at US $80,000.
The materials required include bricks, cement, sand, aggregate, steel windows and doors, iron sheets for the roof, rafters, nails, water, paint, desks, office and student furniture, labour costs among others. The school is expected to grow gradually and expand in the years to come.
