Information & Education Campaign for People with Albinism (PWA), Liberia
Requested by
Liberia Albino SocietyWho are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
The target group for this project is Person(s) With Albinism (PWA) in Liberia, one of the most marginalized groups in the country. The plight of Albinos needs highlighting so that concrete and systematic action can be taken to improve their lives. In Liberia, PWAs are ignored, neglected and abused and are called names such as “Liberia white people", “Jahtos” and "Never die”. Much of the abuse and neglect is predicated on long standing ignorance and lack of awareness that albinism is a rare, non-contagious, inherited genetic condition occurring in both genders regardless of ethnicity.
What is your project and how will it help?
The project is centered on Advocacy/Information Education to be carried out through ten media institutions across the country to enlighten those with albinism in Liberia. The selected media institutions will be used as sources of information dissemination to enlighten people with albinism about the susceptibility of the skin to cancer and the preventive measures to properly manage their skin. The information to be disseminated includes: the type of dressed core, the use of sun block cream SBC, umbrella, shades hat, sun shades, the total avoidance of sun rays etc. This information will be disseminated through the airwaves to properly and adequately inform the vulnerable group.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
Currently, the organization seeks to partner with media institutions for Information Education IE dissemination and transport agencies as a means to facilitate the proposed project implementation. The need for partnership will arise out of the proposed project implementation strategic planned.
