Support Girls Empowerment Project, Liberia

Requested by

Trazar Inc,

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Girls in Liberia and the rest of Africa face challenges that are acknowledged worldwide, but finding the right program and resources has been a major problem. Young women between ages 17-26 in Liberia are the ones who suffer the most from the war; they were violated, abused, forced into prostitution, sexually exploited and raped. This led to traumas, lack of acceptance, and the girls developed low self-esteem. TRAZAR INC. is undertaking this initiative to promote gender equality, working towards building self-confidence, personal value, self-esteem, and moral ethics in young women. They are faced with the challenges of being accepted in the society, lacking the right tools to empower and build up their self-esteem and value. 50% of girls in Liberia are school drop outs, sexually abused or teenage motherhood. Prostitution is on also on the rise and they risk an early death due to HIV/AIDS and violence. Therefore a desperate need exists to provide them with effective tools that protect them and at the same time develop skills that build up their self-esteem.

What is your project and how will it help?

The program is designed to provide a six months training in tailoring and fashion design. In addition receiving tailoring and fashion design courses, participants would engage in a series of holistic program components:

- basic leadership skills
- life skills training
- building positive attitudes which includes: working towards building self-confidence, personal value, self-esteem, and moral ethics in young women, training and income generation, leading to self-sufficiency and protection.

Our methodology is all about empowerment, self-sufficiency, and society building, which we define as essential knowledge and skills, facilitating their confidence and determination; thereafter providing the financial means for a girl to come up with an innovative self-help project. The program facilitates girls’ empowerment through clubs where girls would give peer to peer support.

We want to develop a transformational system, to transform thousands of girls from victims into leaders. A woman is the full circle; within her is the power to create, nurture and transform, the things women have yet to learn is nobody gives you power, you just take it, meaning be confident, and believe in yourself the sky would be your limit.

How can other people partner with you on your project?
