Piggery project to help vulnerable children in Uganda
Requested by
Be a Christ to the Poor FoundationWho are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
We are, in a special way, working with orphans in an attempt to give them hope and a decent future. The project is intended to provide an income for orphans, giving them the possibility to buy school supplies, mattresses, pay tuition and school uniforms etc.
What is your project and how will it help?
We have a piggery scheme arrangement in which we give a pair of piglets to an identified needy orphan, together with some start up feeds and drugs as well as basic guidance. These orphans then raise these pigs in their guardians’ homes. We plan to keep on visiting them for encouragement and guidance. At the moment, we are constructing a piggery structure that can enable us supply at least 250 pigs per year. This will also enable us to support a bigger number of orphans.
We have started the construction of the piggery structure, still needing to finish it and construct a water supply. With the new structure, we shall increase our raised mature pigs to 30. The idea is that this should enable us to supply at least 250 piglets to orphans and vulnerable children per year.
The beneficiaries will first be provided start up assistance – as we normally do, and then be supplied with startup drugs, feeds, and a pair of piglets.
The children will raise these pigs and as they multiply, they will provide an income for the children, giving them a theme cope with life especially in the acquisition of formal education. The income should provide the children with the possibility to purchase school supplies, school uniforms, bedding. Furthermore, will the experience provide the children with knowledge for life (something already proven by previous success stories).
The beneficiaries will be equipped with courage of participating in their own emancipation. As the old Chinese proverb tells, this project teaches the beneficiaries with the opportunity to “learn how to fish,” instead of just providing them with fish. This project is expected to be self sustaining after about two years.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
