RUSOHOKO DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATIONWho are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
The project addresses lack of water for rural communities in Kibondo in Tanzania. Lack of safe water and sanitation is the world’s single largest cause of illness. In 2002, 42 percent of households in Tanzania had no toilets, and one in six people had no access to safe water. Over 30 million Tanzanians do not have access to safe drinking water. The proposed boreholes will not only provide safe drinking water to 12,000 people but they will also increase per person water consumption from 6 to 7 litres a day.
What is your project and how will it help?
The project will construct shallow water wells in Nguruka , Kazulamimba and Uvinza in Kigoma region in Tanzania. Many rural Tanzanians do not have access to potable water exposing them to water born diseases. Women and children are the poorest and most vulnerable people who are worst affected by this problem. In most societies, women and children bear the responsibility of fetching water for the family which is time-consuming, and a physically demanding duty.
The project will also focus on building the capacity of the water point committees by providing them with the technical and managerial skills necessary to manage their water points. Management training will cover such issues as managing and raising funds for repairs, how to re-elect new members when old members leave the committee, conflict resolution etc. Furthermore the sanitation campaigns will continue to promote improved sanitation and hygiene after the project ends as they will be equipped with the necessary skills.
In villages where a hand pump is installed, caretakers will be trained on how to maintain the hand pumps as well as making minor/major repairs. They will receive the necessary tools and spare parts needed for basic maintenance and repairs. It is envisaged that these activities will increase sustainability of intervention
