Funding for Water Wells Project in Sierra Leone

Requested by

Foundation for Local Economic Development and Human Rights Sierra Leone (FLEDHR-SL)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

The Foundation for Local Economic Development and Human Rights-Sierra Leone (FLEDHR-SL) is seeking to help vulnerable people and communities improve their access to safe drinking water, as well as make the act of accessing the water safe and secure.

Women and children have to travel a long way (often 3 to 4 miles) in search of water which they can drink, cook and launder clothes with and bathe in. During the journey to get water, many of these vulnerable people have been raped, involved in accidents, attacked by wild animals (such as snakes) amd forced to undergo Female Genital Mutilation. They may also become sick from drinking contaminated water. It is important to secure safe drinking water for these vulnerable people to improve their living and health conditions.

What is your project and how will it help?

This project will target ten communities in the Tonkolili district in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. There is a lack of pure, safe and clean drinking water in the identified communities. These communities currently depend on stream water, which is unsafe for human consumption. This water poses a number of health risks to the Tonkolili communities, including: cholera, malaria, high fever, stomach pains, worm infestation, foot swelling, and skin irritation.

These ten communities do not have clean and safe drinking wells in the villages where they can access water to drink, cook with, launder clothes and bathe in. This project, through improved access to clean water and elimination of the long journey for water, will help save the lives of women and children, who are vulnerable as a result of the long journeys they make in search of water and from the contaminated water. We estimate this project will have 8,600 direct beneficiaries and 15,456 indirect beneficiaries.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

FLEDHR-SL is seeking for businesses or individuals to fund the consultation, planning and construction of water wells in ten communities (one per community).
