Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Northlink Productions is a community organization, setup 2 years ago by a number of filmmakers. NLP wants to cover all aspects of production. NLP hopes to support, train and build the film talent among youth and to translate their passion into the actual film production.

Through our extensive film programmes, we produce short documentaries on social issues (see organisation profile). By presenting them to the community, we believe that we are working towards community development.

In Turkana County, there are large gaps in knowledge and expertise, as well as in technical skills, in the film and TV production field. This has nothing to do with talent and motivation of many young students in the sector, but it has everything to do with a lack of film industry-geared education and training in general. There is a lack of:
• Training in industry-recognized creative and production roles
• Mentorship from seasoned industry professionals
• No meaningful work experience on quality production

STUDENTS BACKGROUND
Turkana county is located in the Northern part of Kenya, and is one of the largest counties. Turkana has the largest number of unemployed youth. Turkana people are mainly herders. Most youth after completing their secondary education level lack funds to continue for further studies, and instead they are scattered in the streets. The above initiative was started to fully help in ensuring the youth are equiped with the basic skills in film to change the community.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our project is on-going, as it is included in everything our organisation does. However, we hope to specifically engage and help the youth in our community.
Through film we engage several youth to actively participate in film making activities, and help create employment for the youth. Our organisation provides 12 months core training from key industry people who volunteer with us. We hope many continue in the film making field.

Some things we hope our project will achieve include
• Developing the youth’s talents, skills and careers in the community.
• Educating the youth through mass awareness.
• Preventing the youth from human trafficking and child labour in the community.
• Creating employment for youth through their talents.
• Promoting the youths talents through film
• Identify their talents in different fields i.e., music, drama and film industry.
• Educating the community on important current issues, as stated above.

To continue our work, our organisation needs to update our technology, including computers for editing as well as film cameras.

People can partner with us by providing goods, or funds for goods, to continue our projects.

We also would love mentors and teachers for our film students.
