Building hand washing facilities and wells in Magu Mwanza, Tanzania.
Requested by
Ebenezer African Hearts MinistryWho are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
The Ebenezer African Hearts Organization is located in Mwanza Tanzania. The villages we serve are homes to 255 families, 945 inhabitants, of which 462 are female. The majority of villagers in these villages rely on small scale farming and fishing as their source of income. In the dry season, water access is limited to wells, and currently there are no hand washing facilities for school children.
What is your project and how will it help?
We would like to improve community access to hand washing services to reduce illness and death from diseases that are related to access to clean water, sanitation and the inability to maintain good hygiene.
OBJECTIVES
• To construct 100m to 200m deep, bore hole pump wells
• To construct 2 hand washing facilities located in the local primary school which will serve 450 students
• To provide education on HWTS (household water treatment and storage), hygiene promotion and training to ensure the supply of safe and sufficient health protection
• To conduct hygiene promotion and training to reduce the incidents of water related diseases and transmission mechanisms
• The villagers have committed to building 10 latrines themselves as a plan for community development which will occur side by side with the well and washing facility project
IMPACT
The project is expected to provide better access to clean water particularly in the dry season. Water sanitation is still a big issue, and we will continue to work with the local WASH committee in order to educate the community and encourage implementation and monitoring of these projects. The project is expected to contribute to a spirit of cooperation, and promote harmonious co-existence of the school and the neighboring community.
SUSTAINABILITY
A water committee has already been put in place to help to manage the project, select a location for the wells, and ensure involvement from the community in the upkeep of the well. The village believes in ownership of the project, and will contribute financially to the construction and ongoing maintenance of the project. The village is currently running a clean village project, constructing trash cans from recycled materials, and organizing refuse collection days.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
Ebenezer African Hearts will work closely with the Provincial Department of Rural Development (PDRD) to implement the project, based on their past experience and expertise in the areas of water and health promotion. Specifically, PDRD staff will assist EAHO in training local Village Health Volunteers in water and sanitation issues. The local authorities include the village Development Committees, Commune Councils and Village Elders. All levels of local authority have an active role in the implementation of the project activities in all phases.
