Improvement and completion of TB ward at Iganga Main Hospital, Uganda

Requested by

Synergy- Uganda

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Please help Iganga Main Hospital to get space for taking care of people suffering from TB infections. At the moment there is none and the patients are mixed up increasing the risk of spreading the infections.

The issue addressed is the lack of a qualified ward space to specialize in the treatment of TB infections among the people of Iganga. At the moment we have tried to put up the walls but we have run dry and we have no hope at the moment to provide this service. At the moment information from the MS indicates that about 8 new cases with a strange strain of TB which is drug resistant is emerging. This is because the patients take medicine from there homes and there is no one to supervise strict injection. At the moment TB is associated with HIV and there is a feeling among the less informed that if you have TB then you have AIDS. Many people are suffering from TB and are not opening up because they fear for stigmatization that they have AIDS.

What is your project and how will it help?

Provision of specified TB services to the affected people in Eastern Uganda. As mentioned before, there has been a reluctance of handling TB as a specific infection different from HIV infections. There are reports that HIV is on the increase and also there is information that TB is increasing. But not all TB patients have HIV. We need to increase on the knowledge and information that people have as concerns HIV/AIDS and TB. Is it possible to cure TB in an HIV patient completely just as it is in a patient with only TB?

We need a specific center/ ward to specialize in TB treatment and cure among all people suspected to be having the infection.

Iganga Main hospital lacks the facility to handle this situation. Patients are either treated from Home or mixed together with people suffering form other diseases like malaria or broken limbs. This posses a threat to the uninfected.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

1. In provision of technical advise
2. Provision of labour
3. Providing resources

Please detail the resources that you need.

Improvement works to suit current standards= US$ 5,000
Completions of the existing structure= US$ 3,000

TOTAL = US$ 8,000
