Funding for peace educational project (Kenya)

Requested by

Life Focus Group

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

We are trying to help over 500,000 students and pupils of secondary and primary schools and 300 teachers of Nakuru county ,Kenya. We would love them to get essential concepts on peace education. This project has been created in order to end the perennial cycle of violence that heavily affects the region. Mostly of the violence is caused by tribal competition for power especially at election time. Typical of these regions are the clashes between the Kalenjin and the Kikuyu tribes due to historical issues that touch on resource allocation and struggle for power. As a group of teachers part of Life-focus group we thought to empower pupils and teachers with the tool of peace education. We are intending to do so by means of a well structured educational module written by ‘Teachers Without Borders International. We strongly aspire to address the issues and in so doing to adhere to the human rights’ protocol of the UN charter. We wish to promote tolerance, democratic ideals, ability to value forgiveness, reconciliation, enable processes of fear management, understanding, promote global citizenship, environmental education, conflict resolution methods that don’t involve violence. As war begins in the minds of men education is the best was to avoid it.

What is your project and how will it help?

This is a peace education project that targets youths and teachers in schools and by extension the larger community. Its objective is to end the culture of war and instead plant the seeds for a culture of peace. Peace education encourages students from various tribes to value co-existence and mutual respect. Such a program will enable people to concentrate on development programs instead of living in fear, suspicion and hate. peace education will bring back orderorder and sobriety to the interested regions. Kenya’s government will see the value of teaching peace education and it might decide to extend it to other educational institutions as a standard practice. Pupils will acquire life skills like being critical thinkers, independent decision makers, being assertive, good negotiators and effective communicators.teachers will train colleagues on peace curricula so that everybody will become a potential peace ambassador.
for detailed info see the proposal’s attachment.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

We invite other people to become our partners by funding our project and by doing so gaining an active role in the entire project management. Partners will be considered stakeholders and, as such, reports will be sent to them periodically.

Please detail the resources that you need.

We need financial resources to start and carry on the educational project for a year. we have calculated to spend about 58.000 USD to implement the project in the entire Nakuru county of Kenya.
