Set up a Braille transcription centre in India

Requested by

Divya Jyothi Charitable Trust

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Our organisation helps visually impaired people become self reliant.

One of the things we want to do is to help as many blind students as possible to continue their studies and eventually find employment. To this end, we want to substitute our current Brailler with a Braille embosser, a piece of equipment that is quicker than the Brailler, and which can print 300 pages an hour. We also want to help blind people by setting up a Braille library and information centre and we would like to be able to print Braille books.

We have started our Braille Transcription Centre to help students, many of whom discontinue their studies just for the want of Braille books, for which they have to travel all the way to Bangalore. Some students can’t afford to go to Bangalore. To help such students and to benefit the maximum number of students, we want to expand the number of books we produce and also to increase the number of books in the library. Hundreds of students need books to continue their education.

We aim to help visually impaired students, who are want to continue their education and also visually impaired people who have discontinued their studies and now want to continue. The library will also help people who want to improve their knowledge by reading.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our project plans include:

1. Braille Library and Information Centre: The Library project will provide a reading room facility and transcription of books in Braille as well as literary and cultural activities.

2. Braille Book Printing: We want to print Braille books for students, story books, journals, magazines, novels and other necessary books on a large scale.

3. Braille book supply countrywide: We want to supply Braille books for academics, storybooks, journals, magazines, novels and other required books on a large scale across the country.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

We are collecting books from other NGOs all over India and distributing them among the needy students. Now we have started printing books on a small scale. We want to have a library containing academic books to cater for needy students.

Please detail the resources that you need.

Equipment:

2 Braille Embossers cost around rupees 20 Lakhs (Indian Ruppes)
1000 bundle of braille papers, 1 Air conditioning to maintain embossers.

Volunteers: we need 10 people with Braille typing and training skills, and 5 readers and proof readers.
