Solar Energy for Carbon Free Fishing in India
Requested by
Association of Deep Sea Going Artisanal Fishermen (ADSGAF)Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
Climate change due to human intervention has emerged as the biggest threat to our world today leading to a set of existential issues spreading into the health, environmental, socio-cultural and geo-political spheres.
Fishery is an area where a lot of energy and water is used to produce inputs for pre-harvest, harvest and post-harvest activities. Huge amounts of diesel, petrol and kerosene is being used in the fish harvesting sector. Ice, cold storages and freezers are the major preserving technologies in the harvesting sector to keep fish fresh.
The significant augmentation in global temperatures due to human activities worsens the situation. If not given due attention locally and globally, this catastrophe would harshly affect the present and future generations as we won’t anymore find the earth a better place to live. Mindful use of resources, especially depending upon alternative energy resources is therefore, a giant step towards reaching solution to this menace.
What is your project and how will it help?
If we are able to use solar energy technology, products and its services properly, we could save large amounts of conventional energy and water and avoid unnecessary emission of Co2. Solar energy is the cleanest, most abundant, renewable energy source available. Today’s technology allows us to capture this power in several ways giving the public and commercial entities flexible ways to employ both the heat and light of the sun.
Any developmental projects or research projects that do not consider CLIMATE CHANGE will be incomplete. Saving energy, conserving water and minimising the emission of Co2 is the major slogan of the world as “climate change has become the defining generational challenge for the international community.”
Adopting solar energy technology will help to curb the use of fossil fuel. Fuel amounts to almost 70-75% of the total cost of fishing. This shows the heavy dependency of the sector towards fuel. Therefore, any process that shifts the use of fossil fuel with cheap solar energy which requires a one time investment only, will certainly lift the economy of fishing operations.
Therefore, using solar energy instead of fossil fuel will help to save the huge amounts spend for fuel, money and minimize the frequency of engine repairs. It also helps to avoid unnecessary emission of Co2 and keep the fishing operations pollution free.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
Providing of technical knowledge, supplying of materials and equipment, imparting training, documentation of the project, remuneration to the project personnel
How will it be implemented? Implement by the beneficiaries, supplier of the equipment, donors and partners.
What knowledge and equipment is required? Knowledge of the fishing crafts, duration of the fishing voyage, use of lights, navigational and safety items etc.
Based on the size of the boat modification is needed at the boat for fitting the solar panels. Need some additional electrical works.
Please detail the resources that you need.
Materials and equipments – INR.35,75,000
Training – INR. 1,25,000
Documentation – INR. 1,10,000
Remuneration – INR. 3,00,000
