Reconstruction after the Thane cyclone devastation in India
Requested by
The Society for Social Justice and Human Resource Development (SOJAHUR)Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
The severe cyclonic storm “Thane“ that crossed Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry on 30th Dec 2011. Streets in Pondicherry were littered with damaged trees the next day. We were too scared to go out when it was still raining because we were not sure whether more trees would collapse. Even the tsunami did not bring the town standstill like this . This is the worst disaster in 45 years.
We are trying to help the people those who are affected by " Thane cyclone". We are trying to provide them all basic needs like food/provision/clothes/housing materials/medical facilities etc. We are planning to start free counselling for the people those who are mentally affected by “Thane cyclone”. Many people are still suffering without basic needs and shelter. School children are also suffering without study materials and proper medical facilities. After “Thane cyclone” diseases such as cholera and dengue fever are slowly starting to spread all over the urban and rural areas. We are planning to start a free health centre for the worst affected people.
“Thane cyclone” has been announced as a national disaster by Govt. of India. We have never seen such big natural disaster in our past. Farmers and fishermen are also affected by “Thane cyclone”
What is your project and how will it help?
After the rains calmed, Social Welfare Organization leaders began to organize hot meals and food packets for villages involved in the program who were impacted by the “Thane cyclone”.
Sojahur-India-MNGO with the help of few friends in local community and with the young adult volunteers prepared food and food packets in Sojahur multi purpose building. In the Mannadipet Commune villages over 85% of the huts have been severely damaged. There is no running water – the only tap water is currently running with red mud. There is no food. There is no electricity.
As of this writing, we are really in need of your support for the people affected by “Thane cyclone”. Your donation, however large or small, can make the difference between going with or without food for this community.
It helps 1000 families to get their basic needs, proper medical facilities, education for the children, proper living, counselling etc.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
