Financial support needed for schools for Internally Displaced Persons in Burma and Thailand
Requested by
Epiphany Trust
Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
We are helping 700 children within 9 schools, 8 of which are for Internally Displaced Persons(IDP’s) within the Karen State, and 1 school for the children of migrant workers in the Thai city of Maesot.
In a country still fighting a three generation old war, with little prospect for personal development, and widespread slave labour, rape and murder, education offers a permanent gift that can offer hope of a better future, something that can not be stolen or taken by force.
What is your project and how will it help?
Epiphany Trust currently funds the 9 schools. Overheads are kept to a bare minimum, using local workers to administer and teach the programme. In order to ease the burden on Epiphany Trust’s finances in these difficult times, we have invested in a fish, pig and crop farm which has been a great success. As well as helping to establish a sustainable and ethical business, we have nearly recouped our initial investment, and it looks likely that a healthy sum will be channelled into our school programme avoiding costly bank fees.
How can other people partner with you on your project?
Financial support to maintain the project current level of support to the 9 schools.
Please detail the resources that you need.
The work, administered and overseen by 2 local umbrella organizations: the Karen Education Department (KED) and the Burmese Migrant Workers Committee (BMWEC), needs 23,000 GBP per annum to continue.
