Borehole project to avert water crises and diseases at Buloba Parents' School, Uganda
Requested by
Buloba Women's Development InitiativeWho are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
The borehole project is designed to enable Buloba Parents’ school and the neighboring community access safe and clean water.
The project will address the problem of diarrhea, caused by lack of safe water and basic hygiene, one of the biggest killers of children. Accessibility to a safe water source, proper toilets and hand washing with soap will prevent the transfer of parasites found in human excreta which contaminate water sources.
The total number of beneficiaries is 1200 people. The beneficiaries will be residents of the following villages; Kasero, Kiwumu, Kirimamboga, Ttomi and Kalambi.
The project targets especially the school community of Buloba Parents’ Primary school and surrounding community of Buloba Parish where the school is located.
The water project also intends to reduce the distance moved by the pupils to fetch water for bathing and washing. During periods of scarcity, collecting water and carrying it over long distances keeps girls out of school.
What is your project and how will it help?
The project approach will be as participatory as possible with all the stakeholders taking part at all stages; right from problem identification and analysis to implementation and evaluation.
Participatory methods such as focus group discussions, drama and role plays will be employed.
Each step in the project management process will be analyzed and documented for the purpose of increased learning and development of best practices in project planning, management, implementation and evaluation.
At first we are going to solicit funds for the installation of a borehole and thereafter train the beneficiaries on water, sanitation and hygiene; the reason being that provision of safe water alone is not enough to ensure proper sanitation and hygiene among the beneficiaries.
Impact:
The project is expected to create impact on the target group as their health will improve due to consumption of safe and clean water; assuming that the other causes of ill-health are also mitigated.
The project is also expected to contribute to the consolidation of the spirit of cooperation and promote harmonious co-existence of the school and the neighboring community.
SUSTAINABILITY
A water committee shall be put in place to ensure proper utilization of the water facility and its maintenance.
The school will strive to achieve sustainability of the project by ensuring proper maintenance of the borehole and sanitation equipment. The school will make annual budgetary allocations for water and sanitation while the community will also make contributions through the Borehole Management Committee
Each of the 60 household beneficiaries will contribute Shs 3,000 each month for maintenance and repair and this totals up to 60,000/= each month which is equivalent to 72 US$.
