Help children with learning and communication difficulties in Ethiopia

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

In Ethiopia, East Africa, a considerable number of children struggle with learning and communication difficulties due to lack of support. Most of the children (and adults) with learning difficulties do not even know what the cause of their problem is and even their teachers and parents don’t know why these children are struggling at school.

Tragically, a significant number of children with dyslexia, for example, leave school simply because their teachers think that they are too ‘stupid’ to learn. Others face the daily challenge of living with various speech and/or language difficulties such as stuttering, cleft-related disordered speech, phonological disorders and pragmatic disorders. Clearly these children (and adults with such difficulties) need urgent help. That is why we have set up FAILCD Ethiopia (

We use practical solutions to provide help and support to individuals, particularly children, with learning and communication difficulties.We work together with schools and communities to raise awareness of learning and communication difficulties and to improve the quality of life of children living with such difficulties.

What is your project and how will it help?

The main aim of our project is to create and raise awareness of learning and communication difficulties and provide help and support to children living with these difficulties. Our specific objectives include to:

a) educate the general public about dyslexia and communication difficulties;
provide support and advice to children with dyslexia and communication difficulties;

b) train teachers to assess and handle children with dyslexia and communication difficulties;

c) follow up and prevent wrong diagnosis, and evaluate outcome following intervention;

d) devise language-specific assessment protocols which can be used to help children speaking other languages than the national language, Amharic;

e) work with stakeholders: school teachers and parents, ministry of education, higher institutions, media, etc. to raise awareness and improve the school systems in order to accommodate children with dyslexia and communication difficulties;

f) seek to influence policy at regional and national levels.

By doing so, we aim to help children remain in school (and succeed) and therefore prevent them from being exposed to child-labour, child-trafficking, street-life, which would lead to child abuse, etc.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

There are a number of ways whereby interested people/organization can partner with us. This in fact depends on their needs, projects and priorities. So, we are open to hear from anyone who is interested in working with us for this good cause. We encourage organizations to partnership with us by:

a) funding our projects;
b) providing material assistance that can be used to run our projects;
c) facilitate volunteering services;
