emerge poverty free was founded in 1995 as World Emergency Relief (UK). The name change in 2011 reflects the evolving mission of the charity which is to break the cycle of poverty by enabling communities to address their needs and priorities themselves. The organisation works in 13 countries, supporting 38 projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa, Central America and the Caribbean. emerge poverty free works with locally led organisations, empowering them to take action themselves so that they can continue to fight poverty after the charity’s support has ended.
The organisation provides cash grants direct to local partners, and supplements those grants by shipping donations such as medicines, food, equipment and clothing. The organisation also provides support through capacity building.
