Funding for supporting the poor and disabled in Kampala, Uganda

Requested by

Union of Parents of Children with Disabilities (UPCD)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

In Kampala, Uganda, our organization has 152 disabled children that we are trying to help and they are between the ages of 0 – 17years. On addition to that, we also try to help disabled parents and poor parents to children with disabilities. This brings it to a total of 210 members that need a helping hand in our organization.
These people belong to three districts in Uganda so far with very limited finances and materials. However these people do not stay at the centre which we operate, they just do regular visits on weekly basis for various activities and various help. These people normally stay in their respective homes. We also would have several visits to their homes depending on the situations or the conditions of the person we are visiting.
On the other hand, it’s our dream that we could recruit and stay with them at the centre and it’s in plan for the future, so that it can facilitate our service and let them have more chance to be helped.

What is your project and how will it help?

We are running a helping centre:
- As the administration with the help of the committee members, we try to raise what we can, or lobby for funding from stronger hands like your organisation
- We get schools for these disabled children depending on the level of disability
then raise school fees and requirements for them. We then deal with the school
directly to clear all fees.
- We also need finances and materials to avail food staff to those that cannot
afford because poor feeding worsens their condition.
- We also usually hire professionals to teach these people as increase their income by taught them different skills, such as Agriculture, Aquaculture, Arts and so on.
- We also usually recruit counselors and medical office to examine on each
visitor at the centre.
- we also have to purchase materials like clothes, bedding, wheel chairs, shoes
for those that use them but cannot afford.
- For every visit that they make to the centre, we have to avail them with transport to and from since they come from various districts for Medication, counseling, Training, or Aid.
According to these plans, we hope that we can help those disabled children have a better education as to develop their career path in the future. Also, we try to facilitate all the people with disabilities in food, clothing, transportation, as to let them have a better living standard.
