Help orphans and vulnerable children in the Ruiru District, Kenya
Requested by
Murera Community Empowerment and Support OrganizationWho are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
Orphans and vulnerable children are always confronted with immense psychological and social problems. As they grow older, they are also vulnerable to maltreatment (harassment and violence), economic and sexual abuse and exploitation, because of a lack of care and protection. These risks and other vulnerabilities are also likely to harm their future livelihoods as well. A sustained commitment to protecting and improving the lives of these orphaned and vulnerable children is required so as to ensure that their needs are addressed through actions at the local level as well as at the higher levels, so that interventions made can achieve the widest possible impact. We would like to reduce the suffering of orphans and vulnerable children in our district by building their capacity through providing love, care, education and simple activities so that they become productive members of society.
What is your project and how will it help?
Project goals:
-To support orphans and other vulnerable children to acquire education through sponsorship
-To strengthen the capacity (psychological and economic coping) of caregivers, and families to cope with and care for the identified OVCs (orphans and vulnerable children) in Ruiru district
-Build the capacity of orphans and vulnerable children in the Ruiru district holistically.
Project activities:
- Identify 80 OVCs who could benefit from the project in local public primary and secondary schools from the list of the earlier recruited OVCs in Ruiru district.
- Visit the homes of the identified orphans and vulnerable children to access their needs.
- Purchase required items and pay school fees: uniforms (sweater, shirts, short, socks, shoes and sanitary), for all OVCs and sanitary towels for girls.
- Organize meetings with the guardians of the Orphans and vulnerable children.
- Support orphans /homes and guardians of the OVCs
- Caring and looking after orphans and vulnerable children and ensuring that they are physically secured.
- Develop monitoring and evaluation checklists and reporting forms to guide monthly visits by Project officer.
- Providing counseling so as to continue stabilizing children, psychologically and socially.
- Conduct monthly visits to all OVC homes and to monitor academic performance and need for psychosocial support. This process will allow us to identify OVC who are having academic problems or are out of school, assess academic requirements of OVC, allow for academic intervention e.g. holiday tutoring.
- Compile end year report and submit it to the donors.
