Resources for Youth Link Uganda

Youth Link Uganda

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

There is a strong focus on Youth empowerment, with the main aims of the organisation hoping to build the capacity of the youth as a progressive generation, but also helping the whole community to lead a healthier, happier lifestyle. Youth Link Uganda is a non government organisation based in Nambale Sub County, Iganga District, Uganda. Our programmes will mainly affect residents of the immediate Nambale sub county area, however the project hopes to spread further.

What is your project and how will it help?

Three main programmes will help young people and the community as a whole to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Focus is put on young people as forerunners of this programme as they have the energy and enthusiasm to spread their knowledge and encourage others to become a part of Youth Link Uganda, sharing and learning new skills together.

1. The Sanitation project involves building “Tippy Taps” – a basic hand washing unit built from 3 Litre Jerry Cans, sticks and wire – in households throughout Nambale Sub County to encourage and sustain hand washing practices. There will also be a number of workshops held to raise awareness of sanitation issues, giving tips on how to lead a more hygienic lifestyle.

2. The Nutrition project will consist of agriculture education and workshops on how to have a balanced diet. Youth Link Uganda currently runs an agriculture initiative, encouraging pregnant mothers and youths to cultivate a 150 square foot area of land, in return for access to free fruit and vegetables to feed their families. The project is very successful, growing a variety of foods including onions, cabbages, tomatoes and kale. Youth Link Uganda also hope to distribute small growing sacks for people who do not have the capacity to grow large amounts.

3. The HIV/ AIDS awareness project will include educational workshops, condom distribution and voluntary counselling and testing days. Youth Link Uganda will work with local health centres to implement this aspect of their programme, providing basic testing kits for HIV and a number of sexually transmitted infections.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

Youth Link Uganda would like to partner with as many other organisations as possible on a basic level of sharing ideas and skills to become part of a global network.
