Caritas Internationalis - South Africa

Unverified non-profit organisation

Caritas South Africa works on projects to help to improve people’s lives across the country. It promotes the establishment of the home food gardens that have improved nutrition and access to food, and follow-up training in water conservation and harvesting. Work has also been carried out to increase the supply of safe drinking water.

Other work includes:

•Training in organic farming;
•Promoting local recreation and sports activities;
•Tackling causes and incidences of domestic violence;
•Lobbying for greater access to grants and loans;
•HIV/AIDS prevention;
•Environmental management;
•Care for the elderly.
Caritas South Africa directs much of its work towards helping those affected by HIV/AIDS. The agency assists the development of community-based initiatives such as health education, testing, treatment and counselling. Its future plans include moving its focus to helping people to move from aid dependency to self sufficiency, to be achieved largely through the Livelihoods and Rights Based Approach, which address the root causes of poverty.
