Description of the work of KIDSEG
KIDSEG has 30 trained volunteer care givers who conduct home based health care (HBHC) services to people disabled due to illnesses, accidents and HIV/AIDS. Our volunteers train the caregivers in these families on how to handle the patients and donate HBHC kits and mobility assistive devices to them. They later do follow ups and make referrals where necessary. We also deliver mobility devices all over Kisumu County targeting schools and homes for the handicaped, hospitals, churches and individual homes where our services are most needed. In our HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support program, we do psycho-social support to young people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, organize mobile voluntary, counselling and testing (VCT) services in different parts of the County and create awarensss through community outreaches. In order to mitigate the effect of HIV/AIDS and disability we build the entrepreneurship skills of young people in general affected and infected by HIV/AIDS by engaging them in agri – business to make them self reliant focusing more on women and children. In our children focused program, we deliver donated food, clothings and blankets to street children and homes of children with disabilities weekly within the County. The frequency of deliveries depend on availability of means of transport. In order to empower people with disabilities economically, we started internal IGA and profit made is used to fund our loaning scheme to support the enterprises of people with disabilities especially women. The IGA also funds 40% of our HIV prevention activities. As a campaign to reduce stigma and discrimination against PLWHIV and the disabled, we conduct advocacy forums within communities to push for enforcement of policies and legislation.
Results of KIDSEG’s work until now
Through partnership with Amref Africa, we have managed to train 30 trainers of trainees (TOT) in HBHC who passed the skills to other members of KIDSEG who are currently engaged in HBHC within the County. In collaboration with our key community stakeholders like the Ministry of Health and community health centres, we have managed to visit over 400 families affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, families with accident victims and people with terminal illnesse. We trained thier caregivers and donated HBHC kits to them for basic care. We consistently do follow up to ensure that proper care is maintained. Through partnership with Crutches for Africa and other partners, we recieved 40 feet containers full of mobility assistive devices which together with our partners have managed to distribute to different destinations within the County. Some of the beneficiaries are Joyland Special School, Nyabondo School for the Handicapped, Sigomre home for children with disabilties, many community hospitals and several individuals in need. As a way to mitigate the effect of HIV/AIDS, we have trained 30 disabled youths affected and infected by HIV/AIDS in agri-business and supported them in sustainable poultry farming and other farming ventures. We have also managed to train 220 young people in business planning and management and provided them with loans through our loaning scheme. They are now engaged in different businesses within town. In order to accertain social and economic growth of our beneficiaries, we do follow up and during such visits to continue mentoring them and provide them with psycho-social support using our trained counsellors. Our HIV prevention campaign has resulted in over 5,000 youths in general being reached with behavior change communication messages, over 1,000 counselled and tested for HIV and over 300 refered to health service providers for further consultation. In partnership with Elizabeth Okhungu Children Foundation, we managed to deliver donated food, clothing and blankets to over 500 vulnerable children living in the streets and disabled children’s homes.
