Establish Training Centers for Underprivileged Women and Children in Nigeria

Requested by

Foundation for Economic empowerment and Educational Development (FEED)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Nigeria, in terms of natural and human resources, remains arguably one of the richest countries in Africa. However, as a direct consequence of corruption, mismanagement of resources and bad governance, over 80% of its population of over 162.5 million people (2011 census figures), live in poverty, surviving on less than 1 dollar a day. Low per capita income, high unemployment, the scourge of economic degradation, social deprivation, high-level illiteracy and hunger have pushed restraints to the brink, leading to the break down of law and order resulting in violence and destruction of life and property.

Women and children, the most affected by this situation are left deprived and vulnerable. The children have limited opportunities of school enrollment. A report released recently (May 27th, 2013) by the UNDP puts the number of school-age children that are not in school at 10.5 million. The youth have no employment, making them easily prone to violence, thuggery and other crimes.

The Foundation for Economic empowerment and Educational Development
FEED), is an NGO established to intervene by seeking ways to reduce
poverty amongst women through training on skill acquisition and income
generating ventures; provision of education to orphans and other
vulnerable children; programmes to engage, empower and enlighten the youth; and advocacy for citizen participation and good governance.

What is your project and how will it help?

Since its establishment in 2010, FEED has been actively involved in poverty
reduction and educational development activities. With assistance from
philanthropic individuals and organizations, we identify, select and
train women in skills like tailoring, baking, etc. Our project is to build and equip a vocational training center where women will be trained in different skills to help provide veritable sources of income and improve living standards.

The project also includes building and equipping 3 model schools over a period of 3 years, (an average of 1 school per year), in different locations across the Middle Belt (North Central) region of Nigeria. These model schools will enroll pre-primary and primary children taken off the streets and off poor homes. In the long term, this will lead to a fairly educated population of children equipped for the challenges of the future.

Advocacy for good governance and citizen participation in government is also key to our project. We engage the government to accommodate the citizenry in the area of policy formulation and implementation to ensure that such policies are people-oriented and people-centered. This helps curtail corruption and mismanagement.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

We are looking for people who can donate funds for our project and equipment for our vocational training centers and model schools.

Please detail the resources that you need.

We require a total of US$ 2,200,000 over a period of 3 years to build and equip the vocational training center and the 3 model schools.

This is broken down as follows:

1. Build and equip a vocational training center — US$ 700,000
2. Build and equip 3 model schools at US$ 500,000 each, 1 per year, over a period of 3 years.
