Motorcycle Loans for Community Health Workers in Kenya

Requested by

MOTORBANK KENYA

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Motorbank is a for profit social hire purchase company in Kenya. It offers soft commercial loans to purchase motorcycles on hire purchase. As part of our social responsibility, we seek partnership in health care support in Kenya to reach as many people as possible.

This project is driven by community demand. 30-45% of our existing customers are engaged in community health outreach activities, either as Community Health Workers or Volunteer teachers. Demand is highest in remote areas where the roads are too poor for cars to drive.

What is your project and how will it help?

This project provides soft loans to community members and community health workers to buy a motorcycle on hire purchase. Transportation is the biggest challenge to Community Health Workers in Africa and the motorcycle will enable the them to access locations for health visitations.
- to visit Tuberculosis patients
- to monitor HIV/AIDS patients and provide them with antiretroviral drugs
- to steer community malaria eradication programmes
- to conduct other health related mother to child care and reproductive health

They also manage programmes related to usage and storage of clean water, sanitation and hygiene. Community benefits for the first and second set of borrowers has been immense. Beneficiaries have demonstrated an increased number of individual community shelter improvements, higher enrollment of siblings to school, increased number of pit latrines has resulted to better community sanitation facilities and general community well-being, all as a result of the increased income brought about by the micro motorcycle business. With 65 bikes already supporting Community Health Workers we still have a waiting list of 50 customers already vetted for their ability to service loans and over 100 applications from potential customers.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

Partnership is vital especially to cover the capital cost capital cost of motorcycles so that soft loans can be extended to Community Health Workers which is repaid over 18 months. Repayment rates are currently at over 90% due to increased use of technology and by installing GPS trackers in all motorcycles.

Customers are also asked to pay a small deposit as a sign of commitment, additionally, they are vetted by credit bureau and local debt collectors. We also use modern technology to receive daily/weekly/monthly payments through M-Pesa, a mobile money based payment system.

Please detail the resources that you need.

We want to start with a pilot of 10 motocycles per month to be loaned to Community Health Workers over a six month period. The capital investment required is US$ 1,000 per bike. This capital will be paid back to the partner or can be used to give further loans to another Community Health Worker with the partners agreement

We would also welcome support for Community Health Workers in other ways, including donation of motorcycles themselves, either assembled or in kits needing local assembly, riding gear for customers, simple bags/basic kit for Community Health Workers to hold their note books and other instruments, laptop computers for Community Health Workers record keeping and expertise in streamlining our tracking systems.
