Help rural women in Uganda to increase food security

Requested by

Jireh Christian Aid Organisation and Community Development ( JICAOCOD)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

We aim to contribute to the eradication of hunger/food insecurity and environmental degradation through sustainable development initiatives and modern farming technologies.

We know that women are the leading source of food production, and realise that empowering women in modern farming technologies is the best way to achieve increased food production. The contribution of women to food and nutrition security is essential because they provide 70% of the total agricultural labour force in our predominantly agricultural sub county, and are responsible for 80% of food crops and more than 50% of cash crop production and for virtually all food processing. It is clear that if women are supported and trained in the basics of sustainable farming skills and nutrition, 50-70% of the nutrition problems in our sub county would be solved.

What is your project and how will it help?

We want to increase awareness and understanding among the local communities of the value and importance of planting trees and food security. We also want to support women’s groups to implement sustainable development and modern farming methods to increase agricultural productivity and food production. We want to support women’s groups to plant wood lots, fruit trees and timber trees to help with environmental conservation and food production.

The project will be implemented in Mafubira and Bugobya Sub Counties in Jinja district in Eastern Uganda for a period of 12 months.

The project was designed in close participation with the intended beneficiaries and other stakeholders. The approach used to generate information, knowledge during the design and development of activities was through; face to face interviews, meetings, group discussions, and questionnaires. The category of beneficiaries that participated in the designing of the project were women, youths, political leaders, opinion leaders, religious leaders, CBOs/NGOs working in the district and district department of agriculture and animal industry. Their role was to give information regarding the proposed project in the project area.

This project will be implemented in Mafubira and Bugobya sub- counties located in Jinja district. In the 2 project catchment areas, the project will mainly target and support women’s groups involved in sustainable development activities in less resourced areas.
