Eliminate cholera among rural dwellers in Nigeria

Requested by

Eminent Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

We want to help the people of Osun state who live in areas affected by cholera by eradicating open defecation and by providing clean water and sanitation facilities. We have previously implemented a water project funded by
the Australian High Commission through which we provided boreholes and wells in needy communities but only in a few (3 out of 1000). This is the project we would like to extend.

There is a great deal of information on the internet about the incidence of cholera in Nigeria, More than 35 people have lost their lives to the current cholera epidemic.

Cholera kills by day and night, and people still defecate in the open and use unsafe water because of the lack of potable water and sanitation facilities. There is also the problem of nomadic market traders who come into the communities without proper facilities. This means that many people suffer from ill health, lost income, inconvenience and indignity, and infectious diseases spread.

We have a proposal designed to take our project further and have contacted the Ministry of Water Resources both local and state-wide but nothing has been done yet.

What is your project and how will it help?

The project is to have boreholes constructed across the communities affected with cholera. We also want to construct toilets, provide capacity building, and maintenance of sanitation facilities through training Water and Sanitation Committees.

This project will eliminate open defecation and drinking of poor water by the rural dwellers in the affected communities.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

People can partner with us by providing us with borehole drilling machines, financial assistance and technical support. Other people can partner with us by providing us both technical and financial assistance.

Please detail the resources that you need.

The amount is not stable as it fluctuates between USD 250,000 and USD 500,000
