Economic Empowerment of Indigenous Marginalized Women Groups and Mixed Farming Groups, Cameroon

Requested by

Forest and Agroforestry Promoters Cameroon (FAP NGO) Cameroon

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Non Timber Forest Products had been one of the main products in Ngoketunjia division in the early days that provided house hold incomes use for sponsoring most children to schools and Universities. The past four years the community has had problems in the market due to the unsustainable harvesting, processing and packaging of the product. Producers of this product, due to the high demand, mixed the product with sand, cement particles and even seeds of other plant to have it gain weight and fetch more money. This unsustainable behaviour of exploiting the tree products caused buyers not to buy the product again from Cameroon. Through the project with FAO on assisting local farmers through sensitization workshops, the quality of the product has improved and pharmaceutical companies through their agents in Cameroon has started buying the product again.

The producer also destroys the trees and harvested premature seeds that contributed to the bad quality of the products, the producers of these products did not take into consideration other sources of income like shea butter processing and Jatropha cacas planting and harvesting of seeds as an alternative income generation from trees.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our project will promote the conservation and planting of economic viable tree species which include voacanga Africana, jatropha carcas and conservining shea butter trees for income generation for medium and long term benefits. The project will also promote the processing of shea nuts to shea for short term income generating activities and planting of jatropha curcass and voacanga Africana for midium activities and income generation. These activities will be carried out through capacity building on nursery establishment, processing of shea nuts to shea butter by Mbororo women groups and Jatropha and voacanga planting by mixed groups.

The project will target five groups, three Mbororo/hausa women groups who are the minority will mostly involved in shea butter processing and marketing while the two mixed farming groups will be involved in Jatropha and Voacanga Africana production, planting and harvesting. The project will be located in three village communities in Babessi subdivisions in Ngoketunjia Division. The nursing and planting of Jatropha and voacanga as an Agroforestry trees in farms and plantations will help to reduce the effect of climate change and the promotion of biodiversity conservation while income is generated from the sales of voacanga seeds and shea butter increases household income and alleviate poverty in the region.

Marginalization and relegation of women of the Mbororo indigenous people of Babessi have left them with low education, low socio and economic levels, lack of access to credit facilities and little knowledge on owning and managing income generating activities. The Project will capacitate them by constituting 60 women into three groups as Common Initiative Groups thereby enhancing and repositioning them for socio economic opportunities, offering them voice and ownership for sustainable quality life

How can other people partner with you on your project?

The project will be open to volunteers both national and international and to other NGOs who have interest in the project or specific activities of the project. There will also be some areas of particular needs where we might not have the capacities to implement, we will invite other partner with skills to facilitate the areas.eg The mbororo women will surely have problem of language because most of them understands mostly their dialect[mother tong language] we need somebody who can deliver the information to them.

We will equally need partners during project evaluation so that activities gaps and best practices can be identified and worked upon for improvement and replication.

Please detail the resources that you need.
