Shoes and other necessities for school children in Nairobi

Requested by

Hope Beyond Initiative

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Our organization targets disadvantaged youth, youth in school and out of school between the ages of 12-35.

In discussion with school principals, we have identified a need to reach out to boy children alongside girl children. So much has been written about needs of girl children that the position of boy children has been forgotten to the point where we have an extremely independent, learned, successful and more vocal girl child while the boy has slowly receded into the background. In an attempt to deal with this situation, we want to bring the boys on board by buying them boxers, toiletries and school shoes, give them a voice and significantly help to boost their self esteem as growing teens, going on to teenage then becoming young adults and eventually adults who will take up their rightful position in society as sober, responsible men.

We already help a few girls with monthly parcels of toiletries and sanitary towels, and want to extend this project to more children of both sexes.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our project is “The Basic Needs Project”. HBI has been giving a monthly pack to 5 needy girls from Shadrack Kimalel primary school since December 2011. The pack contains a packet of sanitary towels, toiletries, body and hair oil. We also give underwear (every three months). HBI’s intention is to supply each of these girls with a pair of school shoes annually. The number of needy girls in the school is in excess of 500 but the capacity to meet the needs of all these girls has been low due to financial constraints.

If we had more funds, we could help boys in a similar way as we help the girls. We could also help more girls.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

Other people can partner with us by supplying school shoes for school going boys and girls in primary and secondary schools. We intend to give our beneficiaries a pair of shoes every year. They can also give us a constant supply of boxers for the boys, underwear(panties/bikers) for the girls, toiletries and sanitary towels for the girls. We would particularly like to cover all or most of the girls in Shadrack Kimalel Primary school even as we incorporate the boys in the Basic Needs Project. We also seek to replicate this service to more schools in slum settlements in Nairobi Kenya.

Please detail the resources that you need.

- School shoes for boys and girls
- Boxers for boys
- Bikers for girls
- Panties for girls:
- Toiletries(bathing soap, washing soap, hair and body oil)
- Sanitary towels for 600 girls monthly each at $1
