Donate an ambulance for leprosy service in India

Requested by

Madurai Health and Leprosy Relief Centre

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

In the last 21 years, our organization have been serving leprosy patients, giving them free treatment, medicine, dressing materials, clothes, MCR chapel for people affected by leprosy, and rehabilitation services and etc. We also give health education to the population regarding communicable diseases of TB, Cholera, Typhoid, HIV / AIDS, Leprosy, water borne diseases and general health care. We also work to find new leprosy cases and give treatment for free.

Our leprosy patients live in their home in different parts of Madurai district. Some patients are not able to do any work, some patients have ulcer in their hands and foots. They cannot go to take treatment in any other place, and some patients’ relatives are segregated from the patient.

At the moment we are using 2-wheelers and government buses to go to the field and to perform our services. As a result, we are not able to take all the materials with us (medicines, dressing materials, booklets, notices, projector, etc.), and we are not able to cover all the villages.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our Madurai Health and Leprosy Relief Centre (MAHELERECEN) is a Non-Governmental and Non-Profitable Social Service Organization, providing charity activities for general health and Leprosy relief work since 1991 in Madurai District, Tamil Nadu, India.

We provide 4 types of work:
1. Health education
2. Leprosy case holding
3. Free treatment
4. Rehabilitation for people affected by leprosy

Our centre provides health education and leprosy awareness programmes to Educational Institutions, industrial workers and also the public. Our total leprosy cases are 422, and out of these cases, there are 95 disabled (deformity) cases. Up to now, we have supported Socio Economic Rehabilitation (SER) for 45 people affected and deformed by leprosy for self-employment.

Since 1991 we have rendered our services in and around the city of Madurai and Dindigul district. Madurai district has a total population of 3 million, out of which we are covering a population of 1 million, in an area of 60 km radius. Currently we are providing our services through 2-wheeler and hired auto, and we do not have a 4-wheeler for our services.

If we have a 4-wheeler, it will help us improve our services. For example, all our team members can carry all our equipment / materials to perform our service, without interruption and time wasted on travelling. This will save time and we can provide services to more patients in need. If a patient needs hospital care, we can move them with the help of an ambulance.

At present we are giving medicine to 80 – 100 patients per month. If we use a 4-wheeler, we will be able to serve 150 – 200 patients per month. We will then be able to cover the currently uncovered project areas of Usilampatty Block, Melour Block, Thirumangalam Block, Parayour Block, and Vadipatty Block. Our health education service can all reach all the different districts, and more new primary leprosy cases can be found.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

Our existing donors support our leprosy eradication programme, including staff salary, medicine and dressing material, petrol / fuel for two wheeler, administrative cost, etc. However, their grant is small and is not sufficient to purchase a vehicle.

We are seeking donation for an ambulance.

Please detail the resources that you need.
