TONSE Community Based Organization

Unverified non-profit organisation

TONSE CBO is a rural based initiative that was established by community members of the area of Sta Ntholowa, Traditional Authority MBIZA in Thondwe, Zomba having noted the area was lacking various basic needs. Among them was the high prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS and high rate of defaulters of HIV persons who are on ART. The organization is based in the rural areas where the illiteracy levels are high and many people live below the poverty line. The youth constitutes a high number of residents and many organisations have been in the area with their short term HIV/AIDS programs but lacked sustainability. It is because of this trend that the community decided to establish a community based organisation with a mission of ensuring that new HIV infections are curbed, and also come up with a fully fledged HOME BASED CARE PROGRAM to all those that were already diagnosed HIV positive. The organization met a set back in 2011 when DIGNITAS pulled out despite that they had a sustainability plan by producing plumpy nuts that generated proceeds to fund various events. Transport and a proper location to work remain two operational challenges.
