Support Health Clinic for LGBT Community in Tanzania

Requested by

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Due to rejection, neglect and criminalization that is based on gender identity and sexual orientation, more than 2 million LGBT people in Tanzania do not have access to quality health services including HIV prevention, treatment, care, or support.

LGBT people continually face stigma and discrimination, harassment and arbitrary arrests, and even alienation from family. Things are so difficult for some LGBT people living with HIV that they medicate themselves with battery acid.

This calls for the need to establish a user friendly clinic that will provide free quality health services to more than 500 LGBT in Dar es salaam region.

Many, many, many times LGBT individuals have failed to access quality health services in public hospitals due the homophobia in the health settings. The health professionals do not follow the ethics and fail to provide services to LGBT individuals because of their gender identity and sex orientation.

In fact, most people are so convinced that being one of the LGBT family is by choice not buy nature, they simply to ignore or forget that nature can not be changed.

What is your project and how will it help?

WEZESHA in partnership with Ilala Municipality is establishing a Gay Friendly Clinic at Tabata Health Center to help provide free quality health services, including HIV testing, TB screening, treatment care, and support to more than 500 LGBT people in Dar es Salaam region. This will be the first and only clinic in Tanzania where LGBT people can access free quality health services.

We can change this stigma. We all have the power to reclaim our ability to live more full and enjoyable lives, and to genuinely, permanently resolve the differences we have with father’s, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends by helping them understand us better and teaching them to respect our rights, we also need to be living examples by establishing our own clinics where we access free and quality health services.

It is Wezesha’s desire to help as many LGBT people benefit from this project as possible.
