Help to provide hoes for 400 small holder farmers in Uganda

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Our project targets 400 vulnerable smallholder subsistence farm households in Kibale sub county, Pallisa district, Uganda. These households derive their livelihood from subsistence agriculture and rely on handheld hoes for land cultivation now and for the foreseeable future. Despite the importance of the handhoes, there are barely sufficient numbers for each able bodied memeber of the household. This has resulted in the reduction of acreage under cultivation by up to 50 percent and limits the range of crops which can be grown. In addition, farmers struggle to keep pace with the farming calendar. The net effects are low crop yields and poor harvests translating into the fact that these families are forced to reduce the variety and quantity of food they consume and the number of meals they take. Low crop yields and poor harvests mean that there is no surplus to sell to earn much needed household income.

What is your project and how will it help?

Our project aims at supporting 400 smallholder farm households with three hand hoes per household to increase their farm production. Availability of additional hand hoes will help to tap into the available household farm labour which will result in the opening up of more land, preparing it and weeding of the crops in time with the farming season. Opening up of more land and timely weeding the crops will increase farm production and in turn translate into higher incomes and enhanced household food security. Increased incomes and enhanced household food security will enable these farm households to feed their children better, pay for their education, provide for their health and further enhance their livelihoods. Ultimately these vulnerable households will become economically stronger, more stable, translating into improved standards of living thereby reducing their overall vulnerability.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

There are three ways other people can help.
1.Support to find sponsors for this project
2.Donate funds to procure 1200 hand hoes
3.Donate 1200 hand hoes in kind

Please detail the resources that you need.

Our total budget to implement this project is US$6,600
1.We require US$6,000 to procure 1200 hand hoes @ US$5
