Better Education for Young Girls in Northern Uganda

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

YAWARD wants to help girls and young women both at primary and secondary school levels who encounter problems to continue their education in Northern Uganda.

Problems that affect young women’s education are:

- Poverty among parents
- Forced early marriages
- Parents use children as source of labor for domestic works, and to earn income and provide food to the family
- When orphans, elderly children drop out of school to take care of young siblings
- Schools without an appropriate environment (wash rooms and separate latrines for girls and boys)

What is your project and how will it help?

The proposed INTERVENTIONS of the project include:

1. Distribution of scholastic materials (books, pens, school bags, mathematics sets, school uniforms).
2. Construction of girls’ friendly pit latrines with washing facilities (depending on funds, at least 12).
3. Demonstrations of how to make reusable sanitary pads locally to girls and senior women teachers.
4. Hold life skills discussions in schools, in order to empower girls especially in regards to saying “NO” to attempting situations (free things, gifts from men, seduction, etc).
5. Build permanent classrooms for 1,000 children.
6. Build a permanent teachers’ house, computer laboratory, introduce a vocational technical training skills.
7. Construction of wind turbine (depending on funds, at least 3).

The OUTCOMES of the project are expected to:

1. Increase the level of class attendance among girls by the end of June 2015.
2. Enable at least 11800 girls to remain in school.
3. Reduce incidences of school absenteeism among girls during menstruation.
4. Empower girls so that they don’t succumb to pressure, into sexual acts for example.
5. Help in producing mechanical energy for pumping water, lightening, radio TVs, refrigerators, grinding, threshing grains, cutting woods and cooking.

1. To purchase and distribute scholastic materials —> USD 10,000
2. To construct 12 girls’ friendly pit latrines with washing facilities plus rain water harvest tanks —> USD 145,300
3. To train senior women teachers on knowledge of making reusable sanitary pads locally —> USD 35,000
4. To demonstrate on how to make reusable sanitary pads locally to girls —> USD 35,000
