Friends of Lake Tanganyika-FOLT (formerly The Green World Vision) was established in 2012 as a national NGO with its head office in Kigoma / Ujiji municipality, Kigoma Region, western Tanzania, East-Africa. It started by local communities who lived in Lake Tanganyika Basin. It serves as a platform for addressing various environmental and social problems facing Lake Tanganyika and its basin today. The founders realized the need to have community driven organization that would encourage and empower the Lake Tanganyika Basin’s communities to organize themselves to solve their own problems and challenges facing the Lake Tanganyika and its basin for their own well being.

FOLT was registered as an NGO in Tanzania under Tanzanian Non-Governmental Organization Act.

Mission

To end extreme poverty, hunger and environmental degradation across Lake Tanganyika Basin by empowering Lake Tanganyika Basin’s Communities to become a key participant in addressing the root causes of poverty, hunger and environmental degradation in the region.

FOLT’s focus Areas

 Environmental Conservation (biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resources management-fisheries, forest and wildlife; tree planting; protecting and restoring aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; combating climate change-carbon offset; waste management, and environmental justice);
 Clean energy (solar power, biomass charcoal briquettes, hydro-power, wind power, fuel efficient cooking stove, biogas);
 Micro-finance, entrepreneurship;
 Food and nutrition security (sustainable agriculture, fishing, animal husbandry, beekeeping and fish farming);
 Cultural Tourism;
 Primary healthcare services;
 Education;
 Water and sanitation;
 Peace and justice;
 Human rights and gender issues; and
 Refugees’ relief services and humanitarian assistances.
